Multi-sensor Synergy for Monitoring of Algal Blooms in the North Sea

چکیده
The operational service for algal bloom monitoring at NERSC is primarily based on NOAA AVHRR and SeaWiFS optical data. The service has shown very useful in several occasions since 1998 while severe and harmful blooms of the algae Chattonella sp. were reported from the North Sea off the coast of Denmark. Early detection and mapping of the extent and concentrations of the blooms were achieved. However, cloud cover and spatial resolution limit the operationality of this EO-based service. In this work we investigate the benefit from using SAR as an additional source of information in monitoring specific algae blooms. Simultaneous observations of algae blooms from AVHRR, SeaWiFS and SAR are used. Bloom signatures from the different data sources are studied using multi resolution analysis and an attempt of fusing SAR and SeaWiFS images is made.

Inter-comparison of Ocean Colour Data Products during Algal Blooms in the North Sea
Several satellite-borne ocean colour Earth observation (EO) sensors are presently collecting data on an operational basis, including the Envisat MERIS sensor. This study aims at detecting differences in ocean colour EO sensor performances for ocean monitoring and in particular the study of algal bloom situations. The motivation for the present study is to explore how data from different sensors...

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) sensor MODIS-Aqua provides an important tool for reliable observations of the changing ocean surface algal bloom paradigms in coastal and oceanic waters around India. A time series of the MODIS-Aqua-derived OSABI (ocean surface algal bloom index) and its seasonal composite images report new information and comprehensive pictures of thes...

An automatic measuring system called FerryBox was installed on a ferry travelling between Cuxhaven (Germany) and Harwich (Great Britain) enabling on-line oceanographic and biological measurements such as salinity, temperature, fluorescence, turbidity, oxygen, pH, and nutrient concentrations. The high frequent sampling of data allows to detect even short-term events. Observations made along the ...
متن کاملSeaWiFS discrimination of harmful algal bloom evolution
The discrimination of harmful algal blooms (HABs) from space would benefit both the capability of early warning systems and the study of environmental factors affecting the initiation of blooms. Unfortunately, there are no published techniques using global monitoring satellite sensors to distinguish the resulting subtle changes in ocean colour, so in situ sampling is needed to identify the spec...

An automatic measuring system called “FerryBox” was installed on a ferry travelling between Germany (Cuxhaven) and Great Britain (Harwich) enabling on-line oceanographic and biological measurements such as salinity, temperature, fluorescence, turbidity, oxygen, pH, and nutrient concentrations. Observations made along the ferry transect reveal characteristic phenomena such as high salinity inflo...
